A quick update

Ok, so for everyone that doesn't know, I only have Internet access at work or at the library. Work blocks Facebook, my blog, etc., and it's a pain in the neck to go to the library. Therefore, if you want to contact me, call me or email me (I can do limited personal email from work).

Now that that's out of the way, here are the life updates:

I'm currently a law clerk for a judge in Palmer, Alaska. I LOVE my job because it's so interesting and I get along so well with my judge, who incidentally has been very understanding and supportive of my pregnancy. She even threw me a baby shower!

Alaska is great. Incredibly beautiful with very friendly people, and about the same winter-wise as Montana.

Jadon is great. We are loving not being a thousand miles apart and married and all that. :)

My pregnancy went fine with no problems. Baby was due on Dec. 20, but surprised us all and came along on Dec. 3. She wasn't premature, just early. 6 pounds 12 ounces, 20 inches. Delivery went about as well as it can for a first-timer.

Sophia Jaqueline Farleigh is incredibly beautiful in my eyes and is the light of our lives. Her daddy is absolutely devoted to her. She's pretty small yet at 5 weeks old, only a little over 7 pounds. She's bright-eyed and has the cutest, funniest expressions on her face. The pictures in the album are a couple of weeks old, but I hope to get more up soon.

To everyone reading this: I wish I could stay in better contact with you. I'm dying to hear how everyone is doing. Unfortunately, it's pretty difficult to do so right now, but do know that I care and wish I could.

Love to all!

Real substantive update? Nah.

Cool Internet meme involving great works of literature? You betcha! In any case, it seems fitting since practically all I'm doing is reading book after book after book (I made it through more than 20 last week alone!).

So here is the the dealio: The following list is the top 100 books that are marked "unread" at LibraryThing. What you're supposed to do is:

1. Bold the ones you've read for you
2. Underline the ones you've read for school
3. Italicize the ones you've started, but never finished
4. Underline and bold the school books you've come back to in your own time

I've also made fun little personal notes which you can enjoy as well. :)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
Anna Karenina
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Crime and Punishment *This was a product of my self-imposed "classics" reading program in high school and it took FOREVER to read*
Wuthering Heights
Catch-22
The Silmarillion
Don Quixote
The Odyssey
The Brothers Karamazov
Ulysses
War and Peace
Madame Bovary
A Tale of Two Cities
Jane Eyre
The Name of the Rose
Moby Dick
Emma
The Iliad
Vanity Fair
Love in the Time of Cholera *I have this right now in my To Be Read pile :) *
The Blind Assassin
Pride and Prejudice *If there was a way to double-bold this, I would. One of my favorite books of all time*
The Historian: A Novel *Also in my TBR pile*
The Canterbury Tales
The Kite Runner
Great Expectations
Life of Pi
The Time Traveler’s Wife *TBR pile*
Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies
Atlas Shrugged
Foucault’s Pendulum
Dracula
The Grapes of Wrath
Frankenstein
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Mrs. Dalloway
Sense and Sensibility
Middlemarch
Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books
The Count of Monte Cristo *TBR pile*
The Sound and The Fury *This book was SO, SO HARD to read, and I ONLY finished it because it was on the list for my comprehensive exam. UGH*
Memoirs of a Geisha
Brave New World *Also a product of my own personal high school reading program*
Quicksilver
American Gods
Middlesex
The Poisonwood Bible
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Dune
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
The Satanic Verses
Mansfield Park
Gulliver’s Travels
The Three Musketeers
The Inferno *Did this one for Reading Month in high school, along with the rest of the Divine Comedy. You would get a raffle ticket and points for each book you read, but you could choose which books to read, which is why I'm not classifying this as a "for school" book. Other kids read John Grisham, Stephen King, etc., but I, being the pretentious little shit I undoubtedly was, read Dante*
The Corrections
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
The Fountainhead
Tess of the D’Urbervilles
Oliver Twist
To the Lighthouse
A Clockwork Orange
Robinson Crusoe
Persuasion
The Scarlet Letter
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
The Once and Future King
Anansi Boys *TBR list*
Atonement *The movie is great, but the book is better. The ending totally blew my mind*
The God of Small Things
A Short History of Nearly Everything:
Cryptonomicon
Dubliners
Oryx and Crake
Angela’s Ashes
Beloved
Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
In Cold Blood
Lady Chatterley’s Lover
A Confederacy of Dunces
Les Misérables
The Amber Spyglass
The Prince (Niccolo Machiavelli)
Watership Down *SUCH a good book. Made me want to be a rabbit by the time I was done reading it*
Beowulf
The Aeneid
A Farewell to Arms
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Treasure Island
David Copperfield
Sons and Lovers
Possession
The Book Thief
The History of Tom Jones
The Road
Tender is the Night
The War of the Worlds

So for those following along at home, that makes:

16 books read on my own
14 books read for school
2 books read originally for school that I have since re-read on my own
5 books in my TBR pile before I ever saw this list.

That makes a total of 32 books read out of 100. Not bad, but not great either. I guess this list can serve as a good reading list for the summer as well. I should really read SOME good literature while I can.

By the way, I expect this to show up on other people's blogs as well, although those of you studying for the bar may do this as a study break or may wait until after the bar. :)

Belle and I have decided to take our chances on spring break and just see what last-minute deal we can get somewhere in the Caribbean. Sounds like a lot of fun, right? I was super excited until I realized I need a new swimsuit, which means swimsuit shopping. I was going to the mall today anyway, and Gap had a few cute bikinis on clearance, so I went into the dressing room to try them on.

For the first time in my life, I truly understood the "Cathy" comic strip.

Holy cow, it was bad. And now I'm all worried about finding something that I don't feel like a cow in before break. I've already started my diet and exercise program, but I've only been dieting for about a week, and only started exercising yesterday, so no (visible) results yet. I'm also giving up pizza for Lent, so that should help as well. All I'll need for motivation is the image of myself in that bikini in the dressing room....*shudder*

The thing I hate most about law school is what it's done to my self-esteem. In saying "self-esteem", I don't mean it in reference to my own self worth. It's actually a bit of the opposite in that respect. I have grown (up) a lot in the last couple of years, and in a lot of ways, I'm more confident than I have ever been. No, what I'm talking about when I say "self-esteem" is my opinion of my intelligence.

All through elementary, junior high, and high school, I knew I was smart, and it wasn't just because I went to such a small school. I did well on national tests and won awards at academic competitions. I knew I was smart.

Then I went off to college. As time went by in undergrad, I was no longer the very top of the class. But it didn't make that much of a difference at that point because I had loosened up enough that I no longer needed to be at the very top. I was still one of the good students, one of the kids near the top of the class, and I knew deep down that if I wanted to be, I could be the best. At that point in my life, there were other things that were more important to me, especially since I was still doing well in school. And in any case, I knew I was smart.

Fast forward to law school. Here, I don't feel smart. In fact, I feel pretty dumb a lot of the time. I also used to think I was a good writer, but a combination of law school exams, lack of regular practice, and lack of positive reinforcement have shaken my faith in that area too.

On some level, I know that I'm partly the same girl I was before. I mean, just going to law school doesn't erase my history or my education or that thing inside me that I KNOW must still be there. But I'm doubting myself intellectually for the first time in my life. Here, in this world, my brains are not good enough, which makes me wonder if they were good enough to begin with.

Basically, what it comes down to is that I'm scared. I'm not sure where I'm going or what to do, I don't know if I'm good enough for the legal world, and I'm doubting one of the only things I have consistently had faith in about myself.

So where do I go from here?

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am very good at retaining random, mostly useless bits of trivia. This talent comes in handy during board games and when watching TV game shows.

I'm watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire right now, and wondering if I should try out for one of these trivia game shows. I have ALWAYS wanted to be on Jeopardy, and fully intend to do it at some point in life. However, I don't know if I'm ready for it just yet. I think I need to live and learn a little more before I try out for that one. Millionaire seems easier, and also has a larger payout. And goodness knows I could use the extra money! So what do you guys think? Should I try out for Millionaire or Jeopardy? Or is there another game show that is better suited to my talents? Please let me know what you think! I need your advice! Be my phone-a-friends! :)

Side note: The $100,000 question is "The quote 'What mighty contests rise from trivial things' is from what author?" The possible answers are Lord Byron, Alexander Pope, Samuel Coleridge, or Ben Jonson. I had a professor in undergrad who once told me that if a quote didn't come from the Bible or Shakespeare, it probably came from Pope. Pretty good advice, considering it was Pope!

So here I sit at home. I should be doing some homework, but the book is across the room and Zoe is snuggled up on top of me purring and dozing and generally being a love, so I guess I'll wait a little while. In the meantime, I can update el blogo!

Life is going ok right now. I'm behind on my homework, but should be able to catch up if I sit down and hit it hard this weekend. I have a midterm next Wednesday, but I really feel like I get the material. The temperature finally dropped in SB, and now I need to get the heat turned on. My apartment is currently a chilly 67 degrees, which is cooler than I prefer, being the human icicle that I am. Zoe is officially ringworm free (yay!). My parents are coming to visit next week and I got them tickets right next to me (in the 11th row!) for the USC game. I still can't sing, but at least my speaking voice is finally starting to come back after 5 days. I would LOVE to stop coughing one of these days though. It just hurts.

Thus far, I don't have anything planned for fall break. My parents are here for the first part of it, and I don't really have the money to go anywhere. Might take a mini-roadtrip somewhere. Any suggestions?

I need a cough drop, so I'm going to have to wake the Zoe Monster up. Update again when life is less frantic or when I feel like wasting time.

I've started a new Get In Shape program as of yesterday. It consists of three different parts: diet (as in eating less and not eating [much] junk food anymore); exercise (as in actually doing it this time); and drinking that special tea Jadon got for me. I went to the gym yesterday after powderpuff practice and worked out pretty hard. I even lifted a little, which I haven't done regularly since high school. I'm planning on going again tomorrow. Considering how out of shape I am, it will be rough starting out and it will probably take a while, but it's been too long. Plus, I know where I should be in terms of physical health, and I'm not there. Now I just have to stay motivated.

Zoe is being a little turd today. I don't know if she's going through a rebellious phase or what, but I'm getting annoyed with it. I finally got her to the point where she had pretty much stopped biting (except for play-biting, which I allow as long as she doesn't bite down), and then it came back out of nowhere today. At least she learned a couple of days ago what happens when she jumps in the bathtub when I'm taking a shower. Now THAT was funny!

My apartment is a mess, but I'm too busy/lazy to clean it right now. Maybe if I get home from school at a decent hour tomorrow...

Somebody stole my yogurt out of the law school fridge. This has never happened to me before in the last two years, so I'm going to blame it on a 1L. Or maybe a 2L having a particularly bad day. Still, not cool.

To the shrieking harridan sitting behind me at the football game:

Please don't yell obscenities at our players. I realize that you were frustrated at the way ND played. I was too, and so was everyone else in the stadium (other than Georgia Tech fans). However, I don't think that expressing this frustration by screaming at particular players, calling them f***ing idiots (amongst other things), shrieking that you know they will mess up again just like they messed up at a certain game last year, and telling them they should just go home because they're of no use to the team is the most constructive way to support the team. This is especially true since you are supposedly a Notre Dame fan. Also, your screaming hurt my ears. So please stop, and maybe we can have a more enjoyable experience at the Michigan State game.

Thank you.

Classes started today, and it went really well. I think I'm really going to enjoy this semester. Trusts and Estates seems like something I will become more and more interested in, and I think it might be something I'd be interested in practicing someday. Of course, I've only had one day's worth of class in it, so we'll see how the semester goes. Jurisprudence should be all right, although not the most thrilling thing ever, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) was just plain fun! My other two classes are Products Liability, which is my only Tues/Thur class, and Applied Mediation, which is on Fridays, but requires me to actually mediate real disputes, so I'll be spending time outside of class on it as well.

Yesterday, my Journal had its orientation for our new members, and I'm very excited about the direction we're going. We have so many members in my class who are motivated to make things better, and the new members seem like they'll be great as well. When I got the email with our new member list, I was thinking, "Oh good! Most of the 2Ls I know and like are on my Journal!" I can't wait to get my committee to help with the Symposia, because it's just too much for me to handle all by myself.

I'm all moved in to my apartment, if by "moved in" you mean "everything is physically inside". I've still got some more unpacking and shopping to do, but so far it's been going well. I need to buy a dresser and a nightstand, among other things, but my big exciting purchase last week was bedding for my queen-sized, down feather-top mattress. I splurged a little bit and bought myself these really great sheets, 250 thread count and 40% bamboo, of all things. They were out of my price range, but considering how much enjoyment I've gotten out of them already, they're TOTALLY worth it. Most everything else I've bought so far has just been necessities.

By the way, my drive out here went really well. I drove to my grandparents' house in North Dakota on the first day, and intended to drive part of the way the second day, but ended up doing it all in one shot. It was 17 hours of driving total, but I got an early start, and when I was less than 200 miles away from South Bend, and it was only 9:45 pm MT time, I figured I could make it. Major thanks to my friend Belle, who let me crash at her place in the middle of the night! The scariest part of the drive was not going through Chicago like I thought, but rather a stretch of road in Wisconsin where I got caught between three semis for about 20 minutes. It was a basic interstate, with one semi trying to pass another ahead of me. Unfortunately, the one in the right hand lane did NOT want to be passed and wasn't letting the other guy get around him. I was perfectly content to let them work it out from a safe distance behind, until a third semi came up in the lane behind and got so close to me I thought he was going to hit me! He blinded me with his lights, and kept on my rear end until I was finally able to get around the two trucks in front of me. If it had been light enough to see, I would have reported all three of them for their behavior. It was dangerous, and it scared me half to death!

Finally, my big news: I'm getting a kitten!!! My landlord changed his mind about cats over the summer, so I'll be adopting a little bundle of adorableness in the next week or two. Expect pictures and stories. :)

My vacation was great, especially the Boise part. I had a blast, even when we crashed into a tree floating down the Boise River! Didn't get to go to Big & Rich though since Jadon had to work, so we went to the local fair instead. Jadon was determined to win me some sort of prize, so he tried out that game where you hit this round part with a hammer and a little thingy goes up and hits the bell, only this one was digitized and you had to get a score of 100 to win a prize. So he goes up to the game and hits it three times, getting scores of 95, 96, and 95. I started teasing him, so he turns around and says, "Think you can do better?" I say, no, not really, but I'll try, and the lady gives me the girl hammer (which is lighter), and I step up and get a 98, 100, 98 and win my own prize. :) It was very funny, and I gloated about it all night long.

Anyway, the reason for the "eep" is twofold. First, the summer is almost over. I only have three days of work left, and only 2 weeks until I start driving back. Only three weeks until classes start. I'm sad and excited at the same time.

Second, I'm getting on the train today to head out to Seattle to help my boss argue a case in front of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. I'm admitted under the second year practice rule, and I will be doing the rebuttal. I am SERIOUSLY nervous about this, but it's a fantastic opportunity. Not many law students can say they've argued in front of a circuit court. Now I just have to get through it without messing up, fainting, or otherwise embarrassing myself.
